Laura Spece, a third-year student at Penn State College of Medicine, Hershey, is this year’s recipient of the $1,500 Scott A. Gunder, MD, DCMS Presidential Scholarship from the Dauphin County Medical Society (DCMS). Her essay can be viewed here . An award presentation will be held on September 1. Spece is the daughter of Larry and Jeannine Spece, Lancaster, Pa.
Spece has always desired to work with the underserved population; however, it was not until she volunteered at Southeast Lancaster Health Services Obstetrics Department that she wished to become a physician. “Through volunteering at Southeast, I realized that my passions and talents really fit the physician profession,” said Spece. Three years post-graduation from University of Pennsylvania, Spece enrolled at Penn State College of Medicine to pursue her passion.
In 2000, DCMS established the Gunder scholarship in conjunction with The Foundation of the Pennsylvania Medical Society to honor the memory of DCMS President Scott A. Gunder, MD. Dr. Gunder was a Harrisburg gastroenterologist and a clinical assistant professor of medicine at Penn State College of Medicine, Hershey.
The Foundation of the Pennsylvania Medical Society administers the Gunder scholarship. Guidelines and applications for the scholarship are available at http://www.foundationpamedsoc.org/SFS/Scholarships/Gunder.aspx. We hope you will consider making a contribution to the Fund.
