Kevin L. Rakszawski, a third-year student at Penn State College of Medicine, Hershey, is the 2011 recipient of the $1,500 Scott A. Gunder, MD, DCMS Presidential Scholarship from DCMS. An award presentation was held on September 7. Rakszawski is the son of Thomas and Linda Rakszawski, Warminster, Pa. His essay can be viewed here.
Rakszawski discovered his passion for medicine while dealing with the adversity of a personal illness. He viewed the illness “as an opportunity to experience medicine from a unique perspective.” Rakszawski desires to become a hematologist/oncologist. He states, “Medicine is about success and prolonging the lives of our patients. Success and renewal of health is what provides optimism and hope for the future, while death and loss remind us that there is much left to accomplish.”
In 2000, DCMS established the Gunder scholarship in conjunction with The Foundation of the Pennsylvania Medical Society to honor the memory of DCMS President Scott A. Gunder, MD. Dr. Gunder was a Harrisburg gastroenterologist and a clinical assistant professor of medicine at Penn State College of Medicine, Hershey.
The Foundation of the Pennsylvania Medical Society administers the Gunder scholarship.
